Frequently Asked Questions

WLSC began in 1997 as a competitive program serving Washington Local and its surrounding communities such as Point Place, Temperance, Michigan and North Toledo. The recreational program began in 1999 and has been growing steadily providing a place where children can learn the basics of soccer and have fun.

WLSC officers, recreational coaches and assistant coaches volunteer their time to the children of the community. They dedicate their time and talents to ensure that our players have the best soccer experience season after season.

Who can play in the WLSC league? Any child regardless of where he/she attends school may participate in the league. Our teams are made up of boys and girls age 4 to 14.

What is recreational soccer? Our goal as a club is to introduce soccer and its rules to young players in a semi relaxed atmosphere. Players learn the basics of soccer at practice and then perform what they have learned on game day. EAch season consists of 6 games which are held on Saturday mornings at Shoreland field in Point Place. We have adopted the small sided game style suggested by the United States Youth Soccer Association. Less players on a smaller field encourages more individual touches on the ball, emphasizes ball control, and less idol time for each player to pick dandelions or play in the dirt.

How are divisions divided? Our teams are co-ed unless otherwise dictated by the director. Age 4 and Kindergarten play together. Grades 1st & 2nd; Grades 3rd & 4th; Grades 5th & 6th; and Grades 7th & 8th play together.

How are teams selected? Players are placed on teams with others from the same school or area of the city. Players may request a particular coach or friend they want to play with or for. The director tries to grant all requests but at time it is not possible. No special requests are honored once the registration deadline has passed.

Practices where, when and how many? Practices are designed by the coach. Our coaches are volunteers therefore it is up to his or her schedule. The directors do not know where or when each individual team practices. Two practices a week is the norm and last approximately one hour.

Is there a uniform? Yes. Each players must wear a WLSC blue/gold reversible jersey. Sin guards are mandatory for practice and games. Navy soccer shorts, blue or white soccer socks, and soccer cleats or tennis shoes complete the uniform regulations. Soccer socks are worn over the shin guards.

The goal of this program as stated above is to provide a base knowledge of the game. Players wishing to play in high school or college will not be prepared by playing recreational soccer alone,. Those players wishing to compete at a higher level are encouraged to try-out for one of our competitive teams in the GLASS CITY SOCCER CLUB. WLSC and GCS are working together to provide players with individual needs and to foster each player's competitive spirit. For more information about GC visit our Glass City Soccer Club web site.

WLCS and GCS wish to thank the Washington Local School system for the use of their soccer fields. All WLSC and GCS participants are expected to respect Washington Local property. Place all garbage in the cans provided and park in designated areas only. Parking along the streets in the neighborhood is suggested as long as you abide by "no parking" signs.

Please look for the concession stand which provides minimal first aid, snacks, drinks, WLSC spirit wear and club information. If you would like to donate time to attending the concession stand please contact Kathy at wlsc6t@aol.com Any help would be appreciated.
